Jackson was waiting for me at the house when I got home. On the patio, with Jet sitting on the table next to him, he was buried deep in a book.
“What are you reading?” I asked, peeking through the door.
He nodded toward the living room. “Dug it out of that box.” A packrat with books, I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of the ones I’d read. Instead, I tossed them in a cardboard box in the living room. “I didn’t know you liked urban fantasy so much.”
With a snort, I stepped outside. “Jackson, I am urban fantasy.”
“I see your point.” He stood up and tossed the book on the table before greeting me with a kiss. “I guess I am, too,” he added.
I sat down and relaxed into the cool metal chair. “Well this has been an interesting day,” I began as I dropped my head back and gazed at the stars. “I found out where Emmaline lives, and that our missing witch, Esrial, has been holed up in one of her bedrooms. I also found out that Ijibah is here to reclaim some land Harry Cavanagh’s company apparently swindled from her last living descendant.” I raised back up in my seat and reached down to stroke Jet’s back as he brushed against my leg. “Oh, I almost forgot. I nearly shifted in the middle of a complete stranger’s house. Isn’t that great?”
He got up and pulled his chair around to face mine, leaning his elbows on his knees the way he always did when we were about to have a serious conversation. I averted my eyes from his and focused on his hair dangling down the length of his chest. But then he lifted my chin to bring them back up and shook his head. “Don’t disappear on me, Katie. We’re have this conversation.”
“You mean the one about me becoming a full-time dragon any day now?”
I could tell by the way he ignored my snarky remark that we were about to have a come-to-Jesus moment about the decision I had to make. According to the calendar, I had about a week to decide whether to pick up the phone and call my aunt or roll the dice to see if this whole twenty-fifth birthday thing was an elaborate hoax made up by a deluded relative I barely knew.
“You know she’s telling you the truth, Katie. You’re already showing signs that the dragon’s getting more determined, and we’re gonna have to deal with it before it’s too late.”
“We?” I asked, pulling away from him. “There is no we in this equation.” I put on my best mask of indifference to give him those options he deserved. I’d made it clear before that I’d understand if he didn’t want any part of this, and he’d made it clear that he wasn’t going anywhere. But I couldn’t help but keep drilling it into his head that it was okay to walk away. Who were we kidding? We’d only known each other for a couple of months.
